| Details | The session, organized under the Uganda Association of Psychiatrists’ monthly CME series, focused on
Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder (FNSD). The session began with an introduction to the CME
series, followed by a pre-test, presentation, post-test, and question-and-answer session. Dr. Emmanuel
Mpamizo, a psychiatrist with extensive experience in mental health, facilitated the session using a fictional
clinical case.
The case involved a 12-year-old boy who developed difficulty walking and right-leg pain for two months
following a bicycle accident that resulted in amputation of one toe. Despite appropriate surgical treatment,
wound healing, multiple hospital visits, investigations, and medications, his symptoms persisted. The family
suspected of a surgical complication and sought opinions from several hospitals.
The presentation explored differential diagnoses, including normal post-surgical healing, phantom
limb/residual limb pain, and FNSD. The features supporting FNSD included inconsistency between the
reported symptoms and observed functioning. The boy could crawl, walk in a squatting position, occasionally
walk upright for short distances, and swim normally using all limbs. His symptoms also varied with
circumstances, becoming worse when he was bored or asked to stop playing video games. |
