DetailsThe Uganda Association of Psychiatrists (UAP) conducted a Continuing Medical Education (CME) webinar on the “Role of healthcare professionals in the prevention, education, and support of people with mental illness”. The session highlighted the growing burden of mental illness in Uganda, with particular attention to common conditions such as depression and anxiety and vulnerable populations including people living with HIV, refugees, and older adults. Prof. Maling emphasized that most mental disorders begin before the age of 25 and can significantly affect education, employment, and quality of life. He discussed the continuum of mental health from risk to recovery and outlined the different levels of prevention—primordial, primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary; demonstrating the role of healthcare workers and the general community at each stage. The session also reviewed Uganda’s healthcare system and the need for task-shifting, integration of mental health services, and community-based interventions such as psychological first aid. A key recommendation was for UAP to strengthen its website as a trusted source of mental health information, patient resources, and service directories. During the discussion, participants explored collaboration with traditional healers and religious leaders, medication safety, and strategies to improve mental health awareness and access to care. The webinar concluded by reinforcing that mental health is everyone’s responsibility and that prevention and education are essential to improving mental health outcomes in Uganda.
