Details | The Directorate of Police Health Services is mandated to provide Medico-legal services in support of administration of justice. This is achieved through carrying out the examination of both victims and suspects involved in crime as well conducting Postmortem examinations and presenting expert evidence in courts of law. A larger proportion of this work is being performed by the Doctors in the mainstream Health Sector and it has been discovered that, the quality of the work is not to the required standards to secure successful prosecution. In order to address this gap, there has been periodic capacity building trainings for Doctors in the upcountry Health Facilities.
Goal: To enhance and raise the standard of Medico-legal services of Medical Officers in upcountry Health Facilities
3- Objective: To train Doctors in Medico-legal examination and techniques, appreciation and interpretation of findings, writing standard reports and effective presentation of expert evidence in courts of law
Participants: Ten (10) Doctors from, Kotido, Kaabong, katakwi, Abim, Moroto, Nabilatuk, Nakapiripirit,and Napak
The training will take 5 days and cover the below areas:
• Overview of Medico-legal services and Mandate of the Directorate of Police Health services( DPHS),
• Justification for the Medico-legal Training
• Medico-legal Autopsy
• Identification
• Documentation and record keeping
• Body and mortuary management
• Postmortem changes
• Postmortem exam and techniques
• Wounds/Injuries, types and their Medico-legal Significance
• Practical Postmortem sessions
• Asphyxial deaths
• Natural or sudden unexplained Deaths
• Postmortem report writing and Certification of death
• Drugs, poisoning, specimen collection and management
• S/GBV examination, sample collection, filling of Police forms and challenges
• Decomposed and skeleton Remains
• Stillborn or live born with gestational ageing
• Procedure associated deaths
• Court procedure
