Childbirth occurs, regardless of conflict or disaster and, in this environment, the nature of most obstetric care means that you must always be prepared to manage an obstetric emergency.
Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Explain why obstetric anaesthesia is a feature of all surgical projects in austere environment.
- Describe the problems that limited access to healthcare may produce for obstetric patients.
- Know how to manage life-threatening obstetric emergencies, including hypertensive disorders, haemorrhage, sepsis and trauma, without access to high dependency unit facilities and laboratory resources.
- Explain how limited resources affect the choice of anaesthetic technique.
- Describe how to perform neonatal resuscitation and basic medical management of the newborn. |
