| Details | A half-day CPD session at Mpungu Health Centre III introducing core principles and practice of palliative care for primary health workers, aimed at improving symptom management, communication, and referral for patients with life-limiting illnesses.
Objectives
• Define palliative care and its role at HCIII level.
• Recognize common symptoms in life-limiting illnesses and provide basic management.
• Improve patient-centered communication and advance care planning.
• Identify psychosocial, spiritual, and caregiver support needs.
• Clarify referral pathways and multidisciplinary teamwork at facility and community level.
Facilitator: Senior clinical officer with palliative care training, a nurse experienced in symptom management, and a community health worker experienced in home-based care.
Content / Sessions:
1. Introduction to palliative care — definitions, principles, scope at primary care.
2. Pain assessment and WHO analgesic ladder; practical prescribing and opioid safety basics.
3. Management of common symptoms: dyspnea, nausea, constipation, delirium, fatigue.
4. Communication skills: breaking bad news, goals-of-care discussions, cultural sensitivity.
5. Psychosocial and spiritual support: identifying caregiver stress, bereavement basics.
6. Practical session / case studies: small-group discussion of facility cases.
7. Home-based care and community linkages: referral pathways, CHW roles, supply chain issues
Finaly facility team were urged to continue referring to Job aids as well refresher CPDs and trainings to be able to help these patients as they prepare for referrals |
