DetailsInfertility is failure to conceive despite regular unprotected sex over a specified period of time, usually 1 - 2 years. It can be primary or secondary. Population based studies suggest that infertility affects approximately 9% of couples. Male factor contributes to 35%, female 50% and the remaining being unknown. For a woman to conceive, she must have intercourse during her ovulation period, the systems that produce eggs and sperm must be functioning optimally and her hormones be balanced. Factors such as ovulation disorder, tubal damage, age, coital frequency, malnutrition, endometriosis, PID, etc contribute to infertility in women. Unexplained infertility (15 - 30% of the cases) are suggested to be attributed to: luteal phase deficiency, luteinized unruptured follicle syndrome etc. History and physical examinations play a vital role in management. investigations such as hormonal levels (FSH, LH, Estrogen, prolactin), USS especially if PCOS is suspected. Clomiphene, metformin and GnRH therapy have shown significant success.
