DetailsBetween 1st July and 30th September 2026, the Ministry of Health, through the Reproductive and Child Health Department, continued to convene the weekly National MPDSR Community of Practice and Continuing Professional Development sessions. The platform combined routine review of maternal and perinatal deaths with follow-up of agreed actions, discussion of implementation gaps, and continuous professional learning. During the quarter, technical sessions focused on priority maternal and newborn health issues including ICD-11 application for improving accuracy and consistency in maternal and perinatal cause-of-death classification; safe anaesthesia in the management of postpartum haemorrhage; multidisciplinary management of major obstetric haemorrhage and blood transfusion; use of maternal and newborn complication data through MNOCS; and strengthening prevention and management of postpartum haemorrhage through evidence-based approaches such as E-MOTIVE. The sessions were facilitated by experts from the Ministry of Health, referral hospitals, Uganda Blood Transfusion Services, professional bodies, universities and implementing partners. Through case reviews, expert presentations, peer learning and follow-up of recommendations, the platform strengthened clinical decision-making, multidisciplinary collaboration, data use and implementation of actions arising from MPDSR reviews to improve the quality of maternal and newborn care in Uganda.
