| Details | The Uganda Association of Psychiatrists (UAP) conducted a Continuing Medical Education (CME)
webinar on the neurobiology of affective disorders in men, focusing on how biological, developmental, and
psychosocial factors influence the presentation and management of depression in men. Dr. Emmanuel
Mwesiga highlighted that although men are diagnosed with depression less frequently than women, they
experience disproportionately higher rates of suicide, substance-related harm, and delayed help-seeking,
underscoring the need for improved recognition of male-specific presentations.
The session emphasized that depression in men extends beyond “testosterone” alone. We explored the
complex interplay of prenatal androgen exposure, pubertal brain development, neurotransmitter systems,
neuroplasticity, genetics, and environmental stressors in shaping vulnerability and resilience to affective
disorders in men. The discussion challenged common misconceptions by demonstrating that testosterone is
only one component of a broader neurobiological framework influencing male mental health.
The webinar further examined how depression in men may present atypically, with symptoms such as
irritability, aggression, risk-taking behaviours, overworking, substance use, and emotional suppression rather
than the classic features captured by conventional screening tools. |
